and industry lobbyists who work to take our voice away in Harrisburg. I am committed to being a
champion for clean air, clean water and protection of Pennsylvania’s precious land and resources, and
proud to stand with Conservation Voters of PA.”

Working Class Millennial candidate for PA Senate Katie Muth setting a record for hard work!

Working Class Millennial candidate for PA Senate Katie Muth setting a record for hard work!

Pennsylvania Democrats have gotten a lot of good news lately after a very dark November 2016.  Conor Lamb has won in a very red district for Congress.  The State Supreme Court threw out the incredibly gerrymandered maps for Congress, and the new maps are much more fair for Democrats.  A number of Republican Congressional incumbents have retired due to scandal (Meehan) or the fact that they can’t win in a non-gerrymandered seat (Costello).  And Democratic incumbents Gov. Wolf and Sen. Casey are facing absolute clowns in the the general election like Scott Wagner and Lou Barletta.

29541394_10215671987416927_7336305621732221193_n.jpgIt is down ballot where the Democrats need to build up again.  The state house and senate are still gerrymandered in favor of the Republicans.  Republicans even hold a veto-proof majority in the PA State Senate.  Well this can change in 2018.

A race to watch in the state senate is PA-44.  It has been rated in the top three for seats to flip blue.  The seat is held by John Rafferty who unsuccessfully ran for Attorney General of PA in 2016 as a Trumper.  His southeast PA seat means he is now forgetting all this and running as a “moderate.”  The reason it is likely to flip is the Democratic candidate, Katie Muth.

Muth is a ball of energy.  She comes from a working class western PA background and is close to those roots and connects well with working class voters.  She and her volunteers are out every weekend knocking doors and canvassing.  Every weekend…rain, snow, nor’easter, whatever…

Remember if we are going to win it is going to take shoe leather.  We need these young, progressive, and dedicated candidates to win.  Too often we see candidates wait to canvass to the last minute.  Muth has committed to do the hard work every weekend until November.

Remember if we want to have change in November we need to support the people working in the trenches.  Why not support her with a contribution?

GOP CANDIDATES FOR GOVERNOR RACE TO THE RIGHT IN LAST NIGHT’S DEBATE

GOP CANDIDATES FOR GOVERNOR RACE TO THE RIGHT IN LAST NIGHT’S DEBATE

PENNSYLVANIA – In last night’s debate, the Republican candidates for governor showed that they will do everything they can to appeal to the extremist, right wing of their party.

Who was there:

SCOTT WAGNER

Wagner, the Republican State Committee’s endorsed candidate who’s made his own fortune in the waste-hauling business, is very comfortable picking up the torch carried through Pennsylvania by President Donald Trump in 2016, even to the point of calling out “lyin’ Paul” at one point when he felt Mango’s jabs were below the belt.

PAUL MANGO

“Mango, 58, is a former health care systems adviser billing himself as ultraconservative on social policy. He has courted the support of an obscure northern Pennsylvania minister who held a ceremony in which he blessed people’s assault rifles and thinks teachers indoctrinate students into “homosexual” and “transgender” political agendas.” [Morning Call, 3/2/18]

LAURA ELSWORTH

“Ellsworth is a long-shot candidate in the May 15 primary…” [Morning Call, 3/2/18]

Here’s what happened:

THEY ALL BOWED TO DONALD TRUMP

“Asked about how closely they would be aligned with Mr. Trump or his administration, Mr. Wagner said, ‘I supported Donald Trump from Day 1’ and that he expects the president will campaign for him since he won the state Republican Party’s endorsement. Mr. Mango said he voted for Mr. Trump and would welcome the chance to campaign with him.” [Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, 3/1/18]

THEY’RE AGAINST GREATER GUN SAFETY LAWS, MANGO/WAGNER WOULD TAKE NRA MONEY

“On a question about gun control, none of the candidates changed their position to advocate for greater gun-control measures, even ideas supported by Republican President Donald Trump this week following the Florida school shooting that killed 17.” [AP, 3/1/18]

“None of them supported more gun control measures, such as universal background checks or banning civilian use of assault rifles, high-capacity magazines and bump-stocks that turn semi-automatic weapons into rapid-fire automatic weapons.” [Morning Call, 3/2/18]

“Asked later whether they would accept donations from the National Rifle Association, Mr. Wagner and Mr. Mango said yes…” [Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,3/1/18]

THEY REFUSED TO STAND UP FOR VICTIMS OF SEXUAL ASSAULT

“During Thursday’s PennLive/CBS21 GOP candidates debate, all three Republican gubernatorial hopefuls said they would not call on Miccarelli to step down…” [PennLive, 3/2/18]

“Asked whether a legislator should resign immediately upon allegations of sexual or physical assault and what they would do to ensure a safe environment, all three said they would have a zero-tolerance policy. None of them used the word resign.”  [Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, 3/1/18]

THEY ARE ALL ANTI-CHOICE, SUPPORTED THE MOST ANTI-CHOICE BILL IN THE COUNTRY

“All three said they are “pro-life,” with Ms. Ellsworth and Mr. Wagner specifically stating they supported a state Senate bill that would have made it illegal to have an abortion starting in the 20th week of pregnancy, four weeks earlier than the current cut-off. That bill passed the Republican-controlled Legislature and was vetoed by Gov. Tom Wolf.” [Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, 3/1/18]

 IT GOT HEATED

“Wagner, the party-endorsed candidate, accused Mango of “dropping out of the sky” to run for governor. He accused Mango of working for a consulting company that advised businesses how to lay off employees. ‘Every time his consulting company went into a company, thousands of jobs were lost,’ Wagner said. ‘I have a track record of starting businesses.’” [Morning Call, 3/2/18]

“A debate between the three Republicans seeking their party’s nomination to challenge Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf in November’s election quickly became confrontational Thursday night, as former health care systems consultant Paul Mango relentlessly attacked the party’s endorsed candidate, state Sen. Scott Wagner.” [AP, 3/1/18]

“’This is the best time to call him ‘Lying Paul,'” [Wagner] said of Mango.” [WITF, 3/1/18]

“Wagner, the Republican State Committee’s endorsed candidate who’s made his own fortune in the waste-hauling business, is very comfortable picking up the torch carried through Pennsylvania by President Donald Trump in 2016, even to the point of calling out “lyin’ Paul” at one point when he felt Mango’s jabs were below the belt.” [Pennlive, 3/1/18]

Local PA activist Katie Muth takes on anti-women’s health commissioner publicly and wins!

My experience has been that they try to bully you by acting condescending as if you have no idea what you are talking about. What I have found is effective is when one has done one’s homework and reciting back to them what their actual voting record is. They generally start to look like a deer in the headlights and usually quickly run for cover.  read more…  https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2017/9/10/1697491/-Local-PA-activist-Katie-Muth-takes-on-anti-women-s-health-commissioner-publicly-and-wins

Phoenixville-Area Woman Announces Candidacy For PA’s 157th District

Local business owner Melissa Shusterman has announced her candidacy to challenge State Rep. Warren Kampf (R) in the 157th District.

Phoenixville-Area Woman Announces Candidacy For PA's 157th District

PHOENIXVILLE, PA — A Democratic challenger has announced her intention to run for Rep. Warren Kampf’s (R-157) seat in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.

Local business owner Melissa Shusterman will vie for the 157th seat, which encompasses parts of Phoenixville, Upper Providence, Schuylkill, and Tredyffrin.

“It is an exciting time to be involved in politics,” Shusterman said in a statement. “When it comes to the government, there is a great deal of activity, energy, sharing of ideas and frustration being expressed throughout my district. People are upset with the status quo and the lack of transparency with the entire election process.”

Shusterman, a Schuylkill Township resident and Conestoga graduate, is involved with TurnPABlue, an organization aimed at increasing the number of elected Democrats in Pennsylvania politics.

Kampf, a Republican has been in office since 2010. In 2016, he soundly defeated Democratic challenger Hans Van Mol.

Shusterman says she wants to “offer the voters a determined citizen not a career politician.”

According to Kampf’s office, his legislative agenda has “focused on job creation, pension reform, crafting sustainable budgets, improving Pennsylvania’s business climate, and increasing competitiveness through regulatory reforms.”

Shusterman has a master’s in Media Studies from American University. She has worked at companies like The Food Network, VH1, MTV, and HGTV, and has also founded her own digital video production company, Fedora Media.

State representatives in Pennsylvania serve two year terms. The election for the 157th seat will be held on Nov. 6, 2018.

Shusterman announces candidacy for state representative in 157th District

Melissa Shusterman, a fourth-generation Phoenixville-area resident, Conestoga High School graduate, business owner and mother wants to unseat incumbent state Rep. Warren Kampf in the 157th House District.

Shusterman, who has never held elected office before, is running on a “common sense before politics” platform and hopes to utilize recent Democratic Party energy by activists to flip the 157th District.

Shusterman said she is not a career politician, rather she’s a passionate citizen who loves her community and is fed up with the political gridlock in Harrisburg. As state representative, Shusterman said she will fight to protect seniors, put Pennsylvania on the path to fiscal responsibility, and put an end to the Keystone Exams.

She started her career in the media after receiving her master’s degree in media studies from American University. She worked in the field for 20 years at several different startup and national media companies including: The Food Network, VH1, FX, HGTV, MTV, QVC and Fuse network.

While raising her son as a single mother, she founded her own business, Fedora Media, a digital video production company that provides digital video for various devices and platforms. She has been an advocate for positive change and has worked on many political campaigns throughout her life. Recently she founded the Women’s Caucus of the Chester County Democratic Committee.

She states on her website that she will not be pushed around by party leaders or special interests. Instead she will listen to our community and her conscience.

Shusterman currently resides in Schuylkill Township with her husband, Hans, son Paris, and beloved Shih Tzu, Zoey.

Republican Kampf has represented the 157th District in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives since 2010, when he upset incumbent Democratic state Rep. Paul Drucker. Kampf is also a private practice attorney.

The 157th House District includes Phoenixville, Schuylkill and Tredyffrin townships in Chester County and about half of Upper Providence in Montgomery County.

Local PA activist Katie Muth takes on anti-women’s health commissioner publicly and wins!

By Arnold Roth  Sunday Sep 10, 2017

Katie Muth and friend

Many of the readers on this site will have had the experience of taking on the local GOP hacks in county government.  My experience has been that they try to bully you by acting condescending as if you have no idea what you are talking about.  What I have found is effective is when one has done one’s homework and reciting back to them what their actual voting record is.  They generally start to look like a deer in the headlights and usually quickly run for cover.

I recently saw a great example of fighting back by a local activist in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.  Montgomery County is the third largest county in the state and is just northwest of Philadelphia.  Democrats took over the county in 2011 and now control ever line seat.  There is one Republican commissioner on the board still because of minority representation.  But he is a doozy.  He is avid Trump supporter Joe Gale.

Gale specializes in wild accusations.  The county government has gotten so much better since 2011.  Infrastructure fixes that were long neglected by the GOP are finally happening.  However, Gale likes to throw out wild accusations like his hero Trump about corruption of the Democrats but of course provides no support for his wild claims whatsoever.  I have to believe his childish antics are even an embarrassment to the local GOP.  He has also made the supposed persecution of people of faith in Montgomery County (?!) an issue to scream about.  It is like the grown ups govern, while he rants and raves.

Gale’s bigger ambitions led to his latest attack on Planned Parenthood, in which no lie was too outrageous to tell.  He traveled to another county and helped shut down a Reproductive Health Center in a local high school that Planned Parenthood was involved in, by claiming they are pushing “abortion” even though the center has nothing to do with that.

Story Here

This was too much for Katie Muth.  Muth has been a big leader in the resistance in Montgomery County.  She leads an Indivisible Chapter that meets monthly in a Unitarian Universalist Fellowship and also does everything from knocking doors to canvassing in the county and fundraising for Democrats.  She went to question Gale publicly about his lies at a meeting of the Montco commissioners.  She brought other members of Indivisible and the fireworks started:

Skip ahead to 57:00 minutes to see her take on Gale here

This is how it should be done.  If there is one thing that Trump’s election did I hope is wake up a sleeping giant.  I feel like a lot of people are tired of being pushed around by misogynists and ignorant fools.

Muth is also going to run for the State Senate in 2018.  The PA State Senate was hit hard because Democrats, like they did in so many places, didn’t show up in 2014. She is running for the 44th Senate District.  Not only is she a great candidate, but PA ties with Alabama and Mississippi for lack of female representation, so it is time to change that.
