About Danilo Burgos

Danilo Burgos is a first generation Hispanic American whose family moved to Philadelphia in 1990. His family attended St. Veronica’s Church and owned and operated a grocery store in the Hunting Park neighborhood in the early 1990’s.

Danilo attended Roberto Clemente Middle School and graduated from Olney High School in 1997. While at Olney High School, Danilo was an active member of the ASPIRA club. Additionally, Danilo participated in the school’s athletic programs as a member of both the soccer and wrestling teams. It was in his senior year, that Danilo’s passion for social justice and activism took seed.

One significant marker in Danilo’s life was the murder of his uncle Jose Martinez, a Philadelphia grocery store owner, in 1994. This event drastically changed Danilo and sparked his intense interest in small business, social justice and the need for safe communities.

In 1998, he opened up his first grocery store in North Philadelphia. Additionally, that same year, Danilo and several grocery store owners founded the Dominican Grocers Association of Philadelphia (D.G.A.P.) in partnership with the Eastern Pennsylvania Organizing Project (EPOP). Since 1999, the organization has grown to over 385 members in 2014.

Since that time, Danilo has continued owning and operating small businesses as well as becoming an established community leader. He is a tireless organizer and advocate; working for safer communities and economic stability. Danilo is a staunch believer in improving the quality of life for all Philadelphians.

Danilo has also served on the board of the Eastern Pennsylvania Organizing Project, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, White Dog Community Foundation, Projectos Sin Fronteras and Visitation Community Center. In addition, Danilo has collaborated with Congreso de Latinos Unidos and The Latino Partnership on various projects and initiatives.

Danilo worked for Councilwoman Maria Quinones-Sanchez, as the Specialist for Zoning and Small Business, he is also the former Director of Constituent Services for Councilman At-Large Allan Domb.

As a father, Danilo’s children are his prime motivators and drive his passion to continue improving and building a better, safer and stronger City of Philadelphia.
