Judith McCormick Higgins for PA Senate 28

My name is Judith A. McCormick Higgins. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as a candidate for the PA Senate District 28! I am running for this office for a number of reasons. First, I spent too much time, since 2016, angry, depressed and frustrated by the current Administration, both the Federal and the state. These elected “civil servants” have totally forgotten that they work FOR the people. I was raised to believe in the power of service to our communities and have lived that belief for many years. When Scott Wagner decided to step away from this seat, I knew it was time. The second reason I am running is because this is an open seat. I researched women’s pathways to the state legislature, in hopes of being able to do more beyond the school board. I learned that incumbency and party control tend to be very large barriers for women in Pennsylvania. The seat was open, the mood of the country is more supportive of women running and I decided to leave my adjunct teaching position at Penn State York, to focus on running. Finally, I believe that I have the negotiation skills, the collaborative orientation and a strong, moral and ethical code that I believe will hold me in good stead. I am a veteran of 13 years, a wife, mother, a small business owner. I have lived in Lower Windsor Township for over 25 years, been married to my husband, Kevin, for almost 30 years and successfully raised our three sons in Eastern York School District. Our oldest, Josh, is living and working in Colorado; Sean is in the Navy, married and a father of three, while Ryan lives in Hellam. Recently married, he is racing 358 sprints and works in Manheim. I believe in this community and been actively involved for many years. As a 17-year member of the Eastern York School Board of Directors, I worked on many committees and was involved with developing educational programs to benefit our students, as well as building the Middle School, Wrightsville Elementary, and the High School. As a result of concerted efforts by the Board, we made Eastern York School District one that is in demand by parents looking for high quality, literacy-based education, with small class sizes. It is with great pride that I accepted the endorsement of the Eastern York Education Association, reflecting the respect that remains between me and this bargaining unit. In addition to the Eastern Board, I was also seated on the Lincoln Intermediate Unit 12. I served ten years as a very active member of the Board of Directors, supporting students with special needs throughout York, Adams and Franklin counties. Being involved is the way I was raised, and my family joins in. As a PTO member, I helped with the Canadochly May Fair Bake Sale. As a result of my enthusiasm, I was asked to organize and run the annual Craley Days Bake Sale when it was struggling. Critical to the fundraising efforts for the Craley Fire Company, as well as a local playground, I stepped up to help. Building relationships, working hard for over five years, the Bake Sale was able to begin to generate over $1,000 annually via pies, fudge, cakes and the goodwill of Lower Windsor residents and others. I am potentially a bit behind my primary challenger, as he announced his candidacy last October, but I believe that I have more experience, a more level head, and am willing to work collaboratively to advance the goals and objectives of Governor Wolf.
