During a 30-year career as a member of the U.S. Department of State’s Senior Foreign Service, Sherwood’s assignments included Afghanistan, Mexico, the Middle East, NATO, several European capitals, Washington. Before retiring he was assigned to join the faculty of the U.S. Army War College as Professor of National Security Studies, and he is currently an adjunct professor at both Dickinson College and the War College in Carlisle.

Throughout his career he got the job done, negotiating treaties, managing reconstruction projects in Bosnia and Eastern Europe, or helping to bring about justice in Afghanistan. After retiring, he worked and lived in Jordan as a senior advisor for the Financial Services Volunteer Corps, a not-for-profit organization focused on economic development and local government issues.

He currently serves on the Bosler Memorial Library Board of Directors and the Parish Council of Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Community, and is a member of the Carlisle-Sunrise Rotary Club, the Carlisle Area Religious Council and Cumberland Valley Rising.

Growing up in Richmond, Virginia, he earned Bachelor and Master’s degrees in history from the University of Virginia and a Doctorate in International Studies from the American University. His daughter, Claire, is currently attending law school.
