Since 2014, Tom has been the Director of the Lehigh County Office of Veterans Affairs. In 2015, he formed and continues to chair the Lehigh Valley Homeless Veteran Task Force, a collaboration of agencies and offices throughout the Lehigh Valley dedicated to ending veteran homelessness. In June 2017, the Task Force received federal declaration that they had effectively ended veteran homelessness in the Lehigh Valley. He is a member of the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Veteran Mentoring Program, which assists veterans in the criminal justice system, and is also a member of Governor Wolf’s Advisory Council on Veterans Services serving on the Education, Employment and Workforce Development committee, and the Aging committee.
Tom was born and raised near Lake Nockamixon in Haycock Township in Upper Bucks County. After being graduated from Quakertown Community High School in 1980, he enlisted in the military, serving for a total of 21 years.
He served 12 years on active duty as a weather observer and forecaster in the United States Air Force. Upon leaving the air force, he returned to Bucks County and settled into civilian life. Wanting to continue his military service, Tom joined the Sellersville armory of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard where he was a Water Purification Specialist and also earned his military instructor certification. After three years with the guard he switched to the United States Army Reserve where he served as a Civil Affairs Specialist with the 358th Civil Affairs Brigade in Norristown. He then transferred to the 98th Training Division, eventually becoming a lead instructor in Civil Affairs. Tom was deployed to Iraq with the 350th Civil Affairs Brigade(P) as a Civil Affairs Specialist in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2004 to 2005 arriving just as the insurgency and civil war were taking hold. He retired from military service in 2006.
Prior to taking his position with Lehigh County in 2014, Tom worked as a correspondent for the Doylestown Intelligencer and the Morning Call and as a reporter for the Quakertown Free Press; served as the Zoning Officer for Milford Township, Bucks County; and as a Sewage Facilities Planner for DelVal Soil and Environmental Consultants, Inc. in Doylestown. While serving in the Air Force he earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. In May 2017, Tom earned his Masters of Public Administration from Kutztown University. For his work with veterans and the Lehigh Valley Homeless Veteran Task Force, Tom received the university’s Veteran Services Alumni Spirit award in November 2017. Tom has two children, Greg, a 2013 graduate of American University who lives Austin, Texas, and Lindsay, a senior at Quakertown Community High School. He is a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
