The Early Years
Tricia Wertz grew up in Hamburg, Pennsylvania. Her parents were hard working, blue collar workers. Her father working for Pennsylvania Department of Transportation as a mechanic for over 30 years and her mother working as an aide and then a secretary for the Hamburg Center for over 25 years. Trish has worked since the age of 15, her first job at Big John’s Dairy Bar in Shoemakersville, PA. Her parents instilled in her the important of family, community and hard work. She does not know where she would be today if it was not for the support of her loving family.
Trish graduated from Kutztown University with a bachelor’s degree in Education. She is certified in elementary and special education. During her college years, Trish worked several part-time jobs to support herself while going to college full-time. She went on to graduate school at Kutztown University earning a Master’s Degree in Education. She continued her education by taking on-line courses.
Trish began her teaching career at Quakertown Middle School as a middle school history and English teacher. She gave up the long commute to Quakertown by getting a job for the Reading School District as a special education teacher. She spent two years at Reading High School before being hired by Wilson School District as a special education teacher. During her teaching career, she was loved by her students, many of whom she still hears from today. Trish left her dream job of teaching to raise her two sons after the tragic death of her husband in 2006.
Trish continues to organize events to honor her late husband. She is a Vice-President of Law Enforcement United, a non-profit organization that raises money for fallen officer’s families. She is a trustee of Concerns of Police Survivors, a non-profit organization that supports families of slain law enforcement officers. She is a director on the board of directors for the Kyle Pagerly Memorial Fund. She is also a member of the Berks County Heroes Fund.
Trish married her husband Scott in 1995. Their first home was in Muhlenberg Township. They later settled in Sinking Spring, where Trish and their boys still reside. Since 2008, Trish has stayed home to raise their sons while doing volunteer work for several non-profit organizations and running events to honor her late husband, Reading Police Officer Scott Wertz. Trish also has a daughter with her significant other, Bryan Cilento.
